TRAVEL STATS

Travel isn’t just a list of places on a map—it’s the moments in between, the faces in the crowd, the meals you’ll never forget. But every journey leaves a trail, a series of numbers that sketch out the skeleton of a life spent wandering.

How many miles have I flown, chasing sunsets and good stories? How many countries have I crossed, looking for the taste of something real? How many border crossings, train rides, or questionable street snacks? These numbers aren’t just statistics; they’re breadcrumbs, leading back to nights spent laughing with strangers, meals that changed me, and places that still haunt me.

This is the ledger of a traveler’s life. The raw data, yes, but also the heartbeats behind it. Let’s look at what these numbers say—and more importantly, what they don’t.

(I’ll be updating and expanding this post in the future)

AIRPORTS

Airports are strange, liminal spaces—part machine, part organism, pulsing with the energy of arrivals and departures. They’re places of transition, where goodbyes linger in tearful embraces and excitement hums in the footsteps of travelers chasing horizons. Some are gleaming temples of efficiency; others are chaotic, sprawling mazes where the smell of jet fuel mingles with overpriced coffee. Love them or hate them, airports are the crossroads of the modern world, where stories begin and end every minute of every day.

I’ve flown through numerous airports in different countries. Some were claimed to be amongst best airports in the world. These rankings can sometimes be questionable. While they highlight impressive amenities and efficiency, they sometimes rely on other factors overlooking traveler experiences that don’t fit the glossy narrative. What works for one person—luxury lounges or gourmet dining—might not matter to another simply trying to make a quick connection, My example was Seoul Incheon Airport but more about that some other time.

AIRLINES

Airlines are also often put under the review of which one is the best and then making a list based on that. Qatar Airways have been on top of what it seem the best of the best list. I did fly with them on more than one occassion. The first time, yes, everything seemed new, almost intact, food was awesome and the flight attendant were great. That was before the pandemic. My last flight with them was in February 2023 and at that time it was almost the opposite picture. I did read more reviews of other people who flew with them in the past couple of years and a lot of people are noticing a significant downfall of Qatar Airways quality.

On the other hand, I was pleasently surprised with Asiana airlines. Any guesses on which place they rank? You’ll have to scroll the list quite a bit to find them sitting on the 37th stop, even behind Scoot and AirAsia. Even lower is Royal Brunei Airlines on which I had one of the best meals so far. They’re closer to the end of the list at 73rd spot, a few spots behind Ryanair. For statistical purposes, I included the position of the airline on The World’s Top 100 Airlines in 2024 made by Skytrax.

FLIGHTS IN NUMBERS

For conclusion of this category, I decided to categorize the most interesting statistics. Considering the amount of flights I did not have that bad luck with lost luggage so far (happened only in 1.5% cases).

The most interesting case definitely happened in New Delhi. My backpack didn’t arrive with my flight, so I filled out a form and provided my contact information, including that of my Airbnb host. The good news was that it arrived the very next day. However, actually receiving it turned out to be more complicated than I expected.

I thought my Airbnb host could easily accept it on my behalf, but of course, it couldn’t be that simple, right? The host called to inform me that the carrier needed my signature. The problem was that I was on a tour exploring the historic city.

Thankfully, my guide came up with a solution. The carrier was instructed to deliver my backpack to the restaurant where we were having lunch. Initially, the carrier refused, stating that delivering to a different address was against the rules. In the end, he relented and arrived at the restaurant on a motorbike, with my backpack seemingly strapped securely to the back.

To top it off, I had to “tip” him for the extra effort of delivering it to this location. Welcome to India!

  • Dubai – Istanbul 2022, Turkish Airlines. A flock of birds flew into the engine during landing and couldn’t continue with next flight. I had to stay at the airport overnight, at least I got a food voucher at the airport. Got compensated later.
  • San Jose – Mexico Clty 2022, Volaris. The plane had some kind of mechanical issues. The flight was delayed a few times, we even boarded the plane already. Eventually, it got canceled. After a few hours I was able to get a flight out the same evening with a very short connection in Cancun which I barely was able to catch it. Was able to get some compensation a few weeks later.

Whether I’m trekking through remote landscapes, sampling local cuisines, or immersing myself in diverse cultures, I always find something new to discover. Travel isn’t just about visiting places—it’s about understanding the stories behind them and the people who call them home. I love sharing my experiences and insights, offering a personal glimpse into the places that have shaped my adventures. Every journey is an opportunity to learn, grow, and inspire others to explore the world around them
